A Virginia home invasion victim cleverly escaped by stealing the thieves’ getaway car while his loyal dog distracted them by barking loudly. The incident occurred back in July 2023 when 41-year-old James Davis Kennedy and another man pretended to be utility workers to enter the home, according to the New York Post.
Wearing a hard hat, the unnamed accomplice knocked on the front door claiming that he needed to check for a gas leak, says the attorney’s office. He then advised the victim to open the back door, where Kennedy entered with a firearm and demanded he get on the floor.
The resident’s dog quickly reacted to the intruders by barking loudly, causing a disturbance. The victim told the thieves he needed to take the dog outside to calm him. But when he went outside, he saw their getaway car running and drove it around the corner to contact officials.
After the victim returned the getaway car to the cops, it led them to Kennedy, who had left his ID and cellphone inside. The robbers escaped on foot with stolen cash and valuables. Kennedy was later sentenced to 22 years behind bars for armed robbery. A roommate upstairs was also woken up by a robber with a firearm, reports added.
