Back in August 2021, David Wells choked while eating a piece of steak and he was transported to the PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, in Vancouver. At first, the unconscious patient received care and was placed on a machine—in the same room as one Mike Beehler.
However, after a “careful diagnosis,” the hospital staff mistakenly contacted Beehler’s family instead of Wells’. According to the Miami Herald, the hospital confirmed that he was brain dead and needed to take him off the life support machine.
The staff reached out to Debbie Danielson, Beehler’s sister who with a heavy heart committed to the decision. But the real patient in danger was not her brother Beehler but his roommate, Wells— yet PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center proceeded to take off the life support machine.
Meanwhile, Danielson received a call from her supposedly dead brother. Amid the joy, Danielson confirmed to KGW that she had wrongfully made a decision to end another man’s life.
A lawsuit now filed by David Wells’ and Danielson’s family claimed that the hospital was negligent and caused emotional distress. On top of that, they lied about Wells’ cause of death— as they refused to admit their errors.
Rather Wells’ son, Shawn, was informed that his dad suffered a Medical emergency. It was not until after two years that he realized that strangers had decided his father’s fate.
