The tragic death of 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur, a Walmart employee in Halifax, Nova Scotia, has sent shockwaves through her community.
On October 19, Gursimran was found inside the walk-in bakery oven at the Walmart where she worked, Fortune reports.
Her mother, who also worked at the store, had become concerned when she couldn’t locate her daughter for over an hour and her phone was unreachable. After alerting store staff and searching, her mother tragically found her remains in the oven, reportedly alerted by an unusual leakage from the appliance.
Originally from India, Gursimran and her mother had moved to Canada within the last three years. Known for her warm spirit and aspirations, Gursimran’s death has deeply impacted Halifax’s Sikh community. The Maritime Sikh Society has rallied around the family, helping with funds for her final rites and coordinating support for her father and brother to travel to Canada. The GoFundMe campaign has raised over $130,000 in donations.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with local authorities and Nova Scotia’s Department of Labour involved, while the store remains closed.
