A 47-year-old woman who was already in hospice care dying of cancer, was almost strangled to death by her husband who wanted her to die even faster.

Last week, DeWayne McCulla of Utah pleaded guilty to attempted manslaughter for choking his wife, Arenda Lee McCulla on her death bed, Law & Crime reports.

DeWayne claimed that he wanted to ease his wife’s suffering by choking and putting her out of her misery. Arenda was diagnosed with cancer in 2020 and by 2021 it had metastasized to her neck, brain, lungs and liver.

As family members surrounded Arenda during her last moments, DeWayne reportedly started strangling Arenda who was “gasping for air,” before family members jumped in and pulled him off her.

Arenda died the next day.

“He said he put his face up against hers and put his one hand around her neck next to her carotid artery and pushed just hard enough to help her suffering and make her pass away quicker,” detectives wrote. “DeWayne said he would do this again because he loved his wife.”

Arenda’s adult son filed a police report.

DeWayne took a plea deal that reduced his attempted murder charge to attempted manslaughter. He still faces up to 15 years in prison. He will be sentenced in December.
