A Florida teacher has been arrested and charged with child abuse after allegedly striking a 5-year-old student in the face with a ruler, leaving a visible injury near the child’s eyebrow.
Chrishawn Nicholson, 25, a teacher at Aspire Preparatory Academy, was taken into custody on January 9, 2025, DailyMail reports.
The incident reportedly occurred on November 19, 2024. Nicholson initially informed the student’s mother that her son had been playing with a pencil and sustained a cut near his eyebrow. However, medical staff at the hospital determined that the injury was not consistent with a pencil-related incident. The child later disclosed to his mother that Nicholson had struck him with a ruler.
During a court hearing, it was revealed that there is video evidence of Nicholson admitting to hitting the child. Prosecutors stated that the video shows Nicholson acknowledging her actions, with one prosecutor noting, “The allegations are that she hit a 5-year-old with a ruler, the 5-year-old required medical treatment, and there’s a video where she said, ‘I did pop him.’”
Nicholson was released on a $5,000 bond and has been ordered to stay away from the child. The Miami Gardens Police Department and Aspire Preparatory Academy have not yet issued public statements regarding the incident.
Nicholson is scheduled to appear in court for her arraignment on February 5, 2025.
