Nicole Paulino, who lives soundly with her three kids in Maryland was frightened to find out that the government thought she was dead. Apart from causing her emotional distress, the situation led to financial costs as her health insurance was revoked.
In a somehow emotional interaction with NBC 4 reporters, Paulino addressed the issue of her perceived death. “I’m surprised because I’m here,” she said while speaking about the issue. The Maryland resident explained that it all came to light in November 2024, during her attempt to renew her driver’s license. She had visited the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration to request a new ID card.
But following the process, she received an unbelievable text explaining why she was denied the ID. The reason was that the ID initiator was deceased. At the time, Paulino was consumed with fear because she was safe and sound. The IRS also handed her a letter which she was referred to as a “deceased taxpayer.”
Apart from the inability to renew her driver’s license at the time. Nicole Paulino and her three kids couldn’t enjoy health insurance. In an honest and teary tone, she declared that the situation was heart-wrenching. To address the issue, NBC 4 reached out to the Social Security Administration.
The agency agreed that it was an error from a funeral home. The funeral home had a different person—not Paulino, but a staff input the wrong Social Security number instead. Amid Paulino’s realization since last year, there were no changes until January 14, 2025, when the agency admitted it. This was when she was declared alive.
