Ashley Gibson has been arrested for putting her child in harm’s way. However, the 29-year-old who pleaded not guilty argues that she only wanted to keep the 2-year-old warm.
People reported that Gibson from Indiana had boarded a transit bus on December 12. Investigators who checked out surveillance footage said she had a suitcase in her possession. According to Fox 59, while in transit, the passenger allegedly commented on keeping her child inside the suitcase.
Sources confirmed that this statement was either shared personally with the driver or said audibly inside the bus. But whatever the case, once the driver caught wind of the situation, he stopped the bus and alerted the authorities.
About fifteen minutes after boarding the bus, Gibson opened up her suitcase to bring out the child. She claimed that the 2-year-old boy was trapped inside the bag to shield him from the cold. But video evidence suggests that the boy was appropriately dressed for warmth.
According to the court document, the suspect maintained that the case worker gave her the green light to keep the child in the suitcase. Police are yet to confirm if the child was harmed. However, a month later, after a thorough investigation, Gibson was arrested.
Following her arrest on January 14, the suspect was charged with child neglect causing endangerment and criminal recklessness. The suspect has been scheduled to appear in court later in the year. As for now, Ashley Gibson has pleaded not guilty.
