A fetus was found Thursday morning behind a Brooklyn public housing complex in a black bag hidden under a pile of leaves, according to law enforcement sources per the NY Post.
Officers responded to a 911 call just after 11 a.m. reporting an unconscious infant behind a building on East 102nd Street at NYCHA’s Bay View Houses in the Canarsie neighborhood, an NYPD spokesperson told PEOPLE.
“Upon arrival, officers were informed that an unidentified male newborn had been found unconscious and unresponsive,”
the spokesperson said. Sources told multiple outlets that the child is believed to be a fetus between 5 and 7 months. EMS arrived and pronounced the baby dead at the scene, authorities said.
No arrests have been made, and it remains unclear how long the child had been there before the discovery. The city’s medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine when and how he died.
