J. Cole has shared details of his first encounter with Eminem’s manager, Paul Rosenberg, on his new podcast series. The rapper recalled being thrilled to be in the same room with someone affiliated with the “rap god.” However, Paul Rosenberg didn’t share his enthusiasm and dismissed J. Cole. Nevertheless, the record producer was not discouraged at the time and has gone on to become a great success today.
J. Cole Launches New Podcast
J. Cole recently launched a new podcast series, Inevitable, with the first series released on Monday, Nov. 18. The podcast comprises conversations with his manager, Ibrahim “Ib” Hamad, and filmmaker Scott Lazer. In one of the conversations with Ib, the duo reflected on J. Cole’s music career, how he built momentum, and how far he has come. They also reminisced about the 2000s when Cole began to get invites to play at events. Many didn’t work out as expected, yet Cole was grateful for each opportunity.
The rapper was thankful because they signified he was doing something right. One such meeting was with Paul Rosenberg, whom J. Cole and his manager met at the time.
“After that meeting [with G-Unit], we got a meeting with two people: one was Chris Lighty, and the other was – I think Sha [Money XL] had something to do with this – he got us a meeting with Paul Rosenberg who is Eminem’s manager forever and runs Shady Records,” Cole recalled.
J. Cole Reveals Eminem’s Manager Paul Rosenberg Ignored Him
J. Cole disclosed that the meeting proved he was finally gaining momentum. To him, it was like “being at 50’s house and meeting Mark Pitts.” Ib interjected, saying he felt Rosenberg was doing someone a favor by being in the meeting. The No Role Modelz rapper agreed, saying Chris Lighty was more receptive to meeting them. On the other hand, J. Cole said Rosenberg:
“genuinely felt like he was disinterested and didn’t give a fuck. It literally felt like it was a favor. There was no vibe to that meeting, he didn’t see it, he didn’t get it. Which is cool, he didn’t play us at all.”
J. Cole further revealed that Paul Rosenberg claimed to have a meeting he needed to attend and seemed eager to leave the room almost as soon as they arrived. However, the Grippy rapper said he wasn’t fazed because meeting with Eminem’s manager was a good sign.
J. Cole’s Rising Career
J. Cole has launched into global fame since he and Paul Rosenberg met. He first gained wide acclaim with his debut mixtape, The Come Up, in 2007, which caught Jay-Z’s attention. Cole was subsequently signed on to Jay-Z’s record Roc Nation and has won multiple Grammy and BET Awards. He has also caught the attention of Eminem, who referenced him on Doomsday Pt. 2.
Thankfully, J. Cole’s meeting with Paul Rosenberg didn’t deter him, and he has become successful. His rise to fame is a mix of grit and dedication to his craft, and it is good to see his hard work pay off.
