Karen Huger is due in court for her sentencing tomorrow. The Real Housewives of Potomac star is praying for mercy. Huger got into trouble with the law again with her last DUI accident. Her legal team has argued that she crashed out due to stress, emotional trauma, and medication usage and is repentant. However, the prosecution wants her in jail. Hence, the reality TV star appealed to the court for leniency in her sentencing.
Karen Huger Convicted of DUI
Karen Huger is worried that her sentencing may lead her to jail and has requested mercy from the bench. Huger was arrested in March 2024 for driving under the influence (DUI). She has since been at the center of a public controversy. She crashed her luxurious Maserati into a tree, and bodycam footage released during the trial proved the 61-year-old was drunk at the time of the incident. Karen Huger’s sentencing will take place in Montgomery County, Maryland.
She was found guilty by a jury of DUI, negligent driving, and reckless driving in December, although the latter charge was dropped. In the bodycam footage shown during her trial, a visibly impaired Huger admitted she was drunk, saying, “I’m lit,” per Collider. Her slurred speech and staggered movement did little to help her case either.
Karen Huger Appeals Ahead of Sentencing
Since her DUI conviction, Karen Huger has been trying to get a light sentencing. Her legal team said that her mistake arose from emotional troubles, stress, and medication usage. Huger, who lost her mother and father seven months apart in 2017 and 2018, respectively, said their demise was devastating and exacerbated her reliance on anti-depressants. Her lawyers claimed she increased her prescribed dosage, adding that combining alcohol and anti-depressants likely magnified the effects of both substances.
“The losses were devastating,” they explained. “What started as one pill after a traumatic event escalated to two pills after her parents’ deaths, all while continuing to drink socially,” they said per Lawyer Monthly.
Huger’s attorneys noted that these events compromised their client’s emotional health, adding that being in the public eye as a cast member on Bravo’s RHOP affected her greatly and led to her impaired condition on the day of her accident.
Karen Huger Checks Into Rehab
Karen Huger checked into a rehabilitation facility in January 2025. She did a 28-day stint at a Beachside Recovery Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. Her attorney, David Martella, said his client got a rude awakening from her last trial and was “shocked with embarrassment. She could not turn off the testimony or the body cameras. She could not get up and walk out of the room,” he said. He claimed Huger sought help for her substance abuse and past trauma from a sexual assault in college.
Huger’s legal team added that she suffered withdrawal symptoms after she took her last dose of anti-depressants in December 2024. They said the experience and the bodycam footage presented during the trial prompted their reality TV star to take her recovery more seriously and praised her for taking responsibility for turning things around. Karen Huger has also requested leniency before the Wednesday, February 26 sentencing because of her emotional troubles and anxiety.
Prosecution Asks For Tougher Sentencing For Karen Huger
Meanwhile, the prosecution is not moved by Karen Huger’s attempts to get a light sentencing. Her recent DUI case is not her first, as she has been convicted of the same on three occasions spanning from 2006 to 2011. However, the media personality always got off with a slap on the wrist, a situation prosecutors argue has made her incapable of remorse.
“The fact that Ms. Huger has repeatedly been given the benefit of another chance on three separate occasions demonstrates that she has not learned anything from her prior arrests,” they wrote, adding, “It appears as if she has been emboldened.”
Therefore, the prosecution requested a two-year sentence and six months in jail for Huger. They also recommended an interlock device on any car Huger drives and asked that she attend a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) victim impact panel.
Karen Huger is also expected to appeal her sentencing before the judge tomorrow. Meanwhile, the trial’s outcome will likely impact her stay on RHOP. Bravo has yet to comment on the situation. However, fans are hoping for another chance for the reality TV star.
