A Pennsylvania mother of two biracial students has filed a federal lawsuit against the Cumberland Valley School District, alleging that her sons have endured systemic racial discrimination and bullying over the past four years.
The lawsuit, filed on January 24, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, accuses the district of fostering a culture of discrimination that has severely impacted her children’s educational experiences, Fox 43 reports.
According to the complaint, the elder son, identified as John Doe 1, faced racial discrimination starting on his first day at Cumberland Valley High School. He and a friend were allegedly singled out for being Black and were made to sit at the front of the bus.
The lawsuit further alleges that during his sophomore year, a math teacher held up a picture of a monkey in class and compared it to John Doe 1 and another Black student. This incident reportedly led to increased bullying from classmates and caused significant emotional trauma.
The younger brother, referred to as John Doe 2, also allegedly experienced racial hostility. The lawsuit claims that a white student texted John Doe 2, threatening to beat him up. When John Doe 2 confronted the student, he was suspended, while the white student faced no disciplinary action. The complaint states that John Doe 2 goes to school each day knowing he will be the target of racial discrimination and hostility by his peers and school staff.
The plaintiffs’ attorneys, George R. Farneth and Nicholas A. Miller, argue that the district has a long-standing issue with racial discrimination and bullying. They claim that the district has historically condoned behavior that includes racial discrimination, bigotry, bullying, and harassment.
