Shalva Papuashvili, a parliamentary speaker in Georgia, claims that he has signed a law against LGBT rights. It was referenced in a Facebook post released on October 3. The politician emphasized that the Family Values Bill would now take effect. Back in September, lawmakers representing the Georgian Parliament passed the third and final reading of the law. This would mean that family values and minors would be protected from LGBT rights. It would restrict Pride holidays, and celebrations on the streets of Georgia.

New Law In Georgia Limits LGBT Wings

According to Reuters, Georgia would not be forced to abduct the LGBT pride flags show. Books and films promoting LGBT would also be censored as the city deems fit. Salome Zourabichvili, the Georgian president, is opposed to the bill. She explained that it would be blocked while criticizing the Georgian Dream—the country’s most popular single party. However, there were enough lawmakers occupying parliamentary seats who voted for the bill. Thus their overwhelming number was enough to override her authority.

It is no secret that the state is opposed to LGBT rights. According to statistics, polls conducted show a high number of residents oppose same-sex relationships. Meanwhile, the ruling constitution frowns upon same-sex marriages. Reuters confirmed that people who have supported pride marches have been attacked. Amid the history, many suspect that the new LGBT law is an attempt for Georgian Dream to bag a fourth term in office. This is because the leading party’s candidate Bidzina Ivanishvili has a relationship with Russia.
