Liam Jones, 22, was killed after being deliberately rammed by driver Abdirahman Ibrahim, 21, in a road rage attack. The incident occurred on August 1, 2023, in Birmingham after Ibrahim became angry at Jones and his friend, Tayzhon Johnson, for performing wheelies on their e-bikes near the #BullringShoppingCenter.
Enraged, Ibrahim turned his SEAT Leon car around and chased them. As the pair tried to escape down a one-way residential street, he caught up and struck Jones’ bike twice. The second hit sent Jones flying into a concrete post, causing fatal injuries. Ibrahim fled the scene, leaving him to die.
Prosecutor Phillip Bradley KC told Birmingham Crown Court that Liam Jones and Johnson had been heading home around 11:30 p.m. to recharge their bikes when they encountered Ibrahim on Coventry Road. CCTV footage showed the bikers doing wheelies, and the prosecution argued that Ibrahim deliberately attacked Jones to “teach him a lesson.”
Daily Mail reports that Ibrahim denied murder, claiming he was merely racing them. However, evidence revealed Liam Jones was riding at only 20 mph in a 30 mph zone, while Ibrahim was going 27 mph at the time of impact. The prosecution stated, “This was no accident. The defendant clearly intended to cause serious harm.”
During a retrial, Ibrahim was convicted of murder after his first trial resulted in a hung jury. He is expected to receive a life sentence on March 26. His brother, Abdullahi Ibrahim, 21, admitted to assisting an offender and will also be sentenced that day.
