Authorities in India have detained a man who is accused of poisoning the food at his niece’s wedding — reportedly due to his disapproval of her fiancé, according to PEOPLE.
Mahesh Jotiram Patil was allegedly found tampering with the food at the wedding held in Kolhapur, roughly 200 miles southeast of Mumbai, on Tuesday, January 7, as reported by Times of India (TOI), The Hindustan Times, and PTI. After trying to escape, Patil was apprehended on Thursday, TOI stated.
While being interrogated, Patil reportedly informed the police that he felt
“betrayed”
by his niece for marrying a man who was not to his liking, according to the outlet.
“He told us that he did not eat for eight days after she eloped. Therefore he mixed the poison in the food so that everyone would stay hungry,”
assistant police inspector Sachin Bombale told TOI.
A waiter reportedly caught him allegedly adding poison to the food and quickly informed his family, as reported by The Free Press Journal. Fortunately, the food was thrown away before anyone had a chance to eat it, according to The Free Press Journal, The Hindustan Times, and PTI. Patil, who is the bride’s maternal uncle, told authorities that he raised her as if she were his own child, according to TOI.
He is now facing charges of endangering lives, as stated by Panhala police, PTI reported.
