Man With 20 Previous Arrests Busted Following Random Attack On 70-Year-Old In NYC Subway Station

A man with 20 previous arrests, including hate crimes against two women, was apprehended for pushing a 70-year-old grandmother in a Midtown subway station. 37-year-old Sherlock Arana of the Bronx, allegedly attacked Janet Parvizyar, 70, on Monday morning while she was visiting friends in New York City, per the New York Post

The woman informed The Post, “I don’t understand, why did they let them go like this? …I mean, they have to do something about this. He’s going to kill somebody.”

Arana has a history of crime on the subway. Nearly ten years ago, he admitted to assaulting two women in Queens, believing they were Indian, though one was Bangladeshi. He allegedly yelled “I hate Indian people” during one of the attacks. He was sentenced to nine months for a hate crime assault but it’s unclear how long he actually served.

Arana’s latest arrest occurred in 2023 for robbery, according to law enforcement. In this week’s incident, Parvizyar was walking in the underground path to the No. 6 train station when Arana reportedly pushed her against a wall, causing her to slam her head and fall. She was later transported to NYU Langone Medical Center and suffered from neck and head injuries.

Officials later recognized Arana at the Lexington Avenue-125th Street subway station around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday from a Wanted flyer amid an inspection. They discovered a knife on him. He was charged with second-degree assault and harassment, according to law enforcement sources.
