A houseguest strangled his host’s English Bulldog and scattered its remains in Westchester County dumpsters, prosecutors said. Benjamin Tyler was apprehended but released, as the charge wasn’t bail eligible under state law, per the New York Post.
The 39-year-old from New Milford, Connecticut, was staying at a New Rochelle apartment with a 41-year-old man. On Dec. 6, he allegedly took the purebred dog, Bruno, strangled, and dismembered him in a cruel way, severing all four limbs, as stated in a court complaint.
Prosecutors stated Bruno’s body was found in a bucket in a New Rochelle dumpster. His head and legs were in a box in another dumpster. A vet confirmed that strangulation was the cause of death due to his eye spots that showed broken blood vessels.
Prosecutors say surveillance footage revealed Tyler leaving the apartment with the bucket and box. Detectives and ASPCA officers started investigating and got an arrest warrant. Tyler surrendered to officials, was charged, and appeared in court, where Judge Jared Rice
“released him on his own recognizance,”
reports say.
In New York, aggravated cruelty to animals is a felony with a maximum penalty of up to two years in jail.
