Shaurn Thomas who was granted freedom in 2017 and a wholesome compensation was charged with murder. The court documents alleged that the 50-year-old killed Akeem Edwards who had a friendly relationship with his girlfriend.
Meanwhile, the men’s relationship turned sour over Edwards’ failure to pay back $1200 owed to his killer. The payment was a remission for the cocaine he was unable to sell. Per the Philadelphia Inquirer, the murder happened last year.
During the court hearing, the judge alarmingly quizzed Shaurn Thomas about the authenticity of the evidence. After he affirmed the facts of the case, Judge Roxanne Covington found it hard to believe that a man would knowingly return to prison. Consequently, the 50-year-old pleaded guilty to a slew of charges, including murder, conspiracy, illegal gun possession, and other crimes.
As a 20-year-old, Thomas was sentenced to life behind bars. The court convicted him of a second-degree murder regarding a Philadelphian entrepreneur. Allegedly, the murder was during a robbery gone wrong. Fortunately for Thomas, the Pennsylvania Innocence Project influenced his freedom. Meanwhile, the prosecutors maintained that he wasn’t entirely innocent.
However, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office did not accept a retrial. In 2017 after a defense pointed out lapses in police investigation, the judge proceeded to acquit him. Apart from freedom, Shaurn Thomas was given a $4.1 million settlement. He is likely to return to prison once a judgment is passed in February 2025.
