Man Sentenced After Molesting 12-Year-Old Girl and Then Plotting To Murder Her From Behind Bars

A Rhode Island registered sex offender, 30-year-old Chandler J. Cardente, admitted to luring a 12-year-old girl for sexual encounters and attempting to have her killed to prevent her from testifying. He pleaded guilty to three felony charges in federal court, according to PEOPLE.

The man, previously a registered sex offender for molesting a 2-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl back in 2014, met a 12-year-old girl while pretending to be 17 on a messaging app back in 2021, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

What Happened?

After months of chatting online, Cardente told the girl he wanted to have sex with her. He went on to meet her near her middle school. Prosecutors stated he drove her to different places in Rhode Island and had sexual contact with her numerous times before he was apprehended.

While in jail, Cardente reached out to an undercover officer, posing as a hitman, to kill the girl because she could testify against him. The  man offered $200 cash and $1,500 in tattoo equipment. He was sentenced to 35 years in federal prison. He is currently serving a 35-year state sentence for molesting the child. The federal sentence will run at the same time, with his release not expected before 2056.
