Jason Thomas, 40, received two years and six months in prison for manslaughter on Monday. The victim, Liam Morgan-Whittle, 22, died on March 25, 2023, after being punched twice. The incident happened after a dispute over who could endure punches better.
The two had been drinking alcohol and taking cocaine before the incident. They returned to an apartment, where they started a punching game that ended tragically. Thomas punched Morgan-Whittle twice, knocking him unconscious almost instantly.
Emergency services were called after his condition worsened rapidly inside the apartment that evening. Unfortunately, despite efforts from paramedics, Morgan-Whittle died from his injuries soon after.
A police statement confirmed that the victim sustained catastrophic head injuries caused by both forceful punches. Witnesses said the argument started as banter but became aggressive before turning violent. A friend warned them not to continue, but the fight escalated quickly.
Prosecutor William Hughes KC explained how the situation deteriorated and led to the fatal event. The defense insisted Thomas never intended to harm Morgan-Whittle seriously or cause his death. His lawyer claimed he struggled with remorse after realizing the consequences of his actions.
Judge Paul Thomas KC criticized the suspect’s actions, blaming alcohol and drug influence for the poor decisions. He said Thomas ignored warnings from others and delivered forceful punches that caused cardiac arrest.
According to BBC, Liam Morgan-Whittle’s mother, Claire Whittle, shared her devastation over losing her beloved son unexpectedly. She expressed deep pain, anger, and sorrow, stating that no family should experience such heartbreak.
She described Liam as loving, caring, and full of dreams that were tragically shattered. Her family continues struggling to cope with their painful loss and unanswered questions.
