On January 19, the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department was alerted by a distressed family in Alabama. According to the police statement, they arrived on the scene to find Luis Lopez-Martinez in the custody of the family.
They claimed that the 38-year-old from Guatemala sexually abused their minor and he was caught in the act. Following his arrest, police were told that the victim was receiving medical attention in a local hospital.
Expectedly, the authorities questioned the man in their custody and that was when he made a rather shocking comment. Luis Lopez-Martinez whom the police first identified as Mario Francisco Martin, did not maintain a remorseful demeanor. Rather he allegedly told investigators, “It is what it is.”
After concluding that Lopez-Martinez had indeed acted as accused, the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department slammed him with a charge including sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old.
Since then, the suspect has been in police detention, and a $250,000 bond has been set. Sources have yet to confirm whether the 38-year-old has an attorney. It’s also uncertain whether he has pleaded guilty to the crime.
Apart from being held behind bars, Luis Lopez-Martinez is on the radar of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement. An immigration detainer has been placed on the suspect.
