Renowned actress Margot Robbie has revealed she is the brain behind the frontal nude scene in her breakout movie, Wolf of Wall Street. She added that Martin Scorsese offered to make her comfortable by allowing her to wear a robe, which she refused. The actress also shared previously unknown insights into other scenes on and off-camera.
Margot Robbie Responsible for Frontal Nude Scene
Over a decade after her breakout role in Wolf of Wall Street, Margot Robbie is spilling the beans on one of the most memorable scenes in the movie. In an interview with Talking Pictures podcast host Ben Mankiewicz last week, the actress revealed she suggested going fully naked in the 2013 film. The movie famously has a full-frontal nude scene where Margot Robbie’s character, Naomi, tries to seduce Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Jordan Belfort.
Robbie said she told director Scorsese she wanted to do what her character would do, so she rejected a robe Scorsese suggested might make her feel comfortable.
“That’s not what she would do in that scene,” the actress told the podcast host. “The whole point is that she’s going to come out completely naked—that’s the card she’s playing.”
Margot Robbie Thought She Would Go to Jail
Besides suggesting the nude scene, Margot Robbie took some more creative liberties. The three-time Oscar nominee revealed she slapped Dicaprio’s character during her final audition when he asked for a kiss completely of her own will. The slap was not in the script, but the Barbie star thought it would add flair.
“I thought, ‘I could kiss Leonardo DiCaprio right now, and that would be awesome. I can’t wait to tell all of my friends this.’ And then I thought… ‘nah.’ And just walloped him in the face,” she recalled.
Robbie immediately regretted the slap as she thought she would be sued for hitting hard. The Suicide Squad actress recounted how everyone was still for what seemed like forever but was likely three seconds before they started laughing. She recalled how hard Scorsese and DiCaprio laughed, but all she could think of was her career ending.
“I was thinking, I’m going to get arrested, I’m pretty sure that’s assault, battery. ‘Not only will you never work again, actually you will go to jail for this, you idiot,” she recalled.

In addition to her nude scene, Margot Robbie also suggested having Naomi and Jordan sleep together before Naomi asked for a divorce. She revealed this in 2022 during BAFTA’s popular A Life In Pictures series.
“We were a couple of months into the shoot at that point. The tone had been set that it was a bit of a free for all. It was like the crazier you are, the more Marty will like it. And the more screen time you’re going to get,” Robbie said.
The actress disclosed that Scorsese created an enabling environment for her and others to share their thoughts and encouraged experimentation. She revealed that it was easy to talk to the director for script revisions, and they would often sit at the video village as he shared stories. Robbie noted that she never felt intimidated by Scorsese despite her age, and he only gave her direction once throughout the shoot.
Margot Robbie’s nude scene and other creative ideas helped make the movie more memorable, and it is heartwarming to learn about director Martin Scorsese’s role. Hopefully, other younger actors will also have a chance to explore their creativity.
