Prosecutors are blaming Marisol Vasquez for snuffing out life from her child, 21-month-old Lucia. The unsavory incident reportedly occurred during the holidays—on December 20, precisely. While other parents were getting excited to give their kids presents, the Chicago mom was shielding her dead child in bed.
CBS News claimed that Marisol Vasquez was found naked with her daughter lying behind her. Immediately, first responders who arrived at the scene around 8 a.m. tried to revive the child. They noticed her unresponsiveness and later spotted water in her mouth.
Upon investigation, the police discovered a bathtub filled with water and clothing. Per Tribune, young Lucia was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Amid the realization that her child was no more, the Chicago mom did little to help the authorities at first. She made incoherent statements about water, nature, and being trapped by electronics. Vasquez was then transported to Ascension St. Mary Hospital for mental evaluation.
On January 2, she was led out by the police who began questioning her. Marisol Vasquez soon confessed to killing Lucia with the bed sheets, but according to her, this act was influenced by “voices” in her head. The 37-year-old claimed that the voices advised her to kill the child and herself to save them from the devil.
Although she tried to drown and later cut herself, she failed to end her own life. Reportedly, the Chicago native had told her sister about the killing and wanted it to be hush-hush. It is unclear who alerted the cops to her residence. As the investigation continues, the suspect is being held in Cook County jail as she is set to appear in court on January 7.
