A Missouri father received 13-years behind bars for shooting a youth football coach, Shaquille Latimore, over his son’s playing time while children practiced close by back in October 2023. 45-year-old Daryl Clemmons was convicted of assault in last month’s trial, per the New York Post. Reports noted that both men carried a firearm.
Prosecutors say the coach gave his firearm to a friend and suggested a fistfight with Clemmons, who refused and later shot Latimore five times instead. After fleeing, Clemmons turned himself into officials later that evening. St. Louis officials suspended the team due to ongoing adult-related incidents despite Latimore believing that this was unfair.
The defense claimed self-defense and sought a new trial. The St. Louis Circuit Attorney said the men argued about Clemmon’s son’s playing time.
Gabe Gore, Circuit Attorney, said in a statement following the verdict, “Violence, especially in youth sports, is completely unacceptable and undermines the purpose of these programs — teaching teamwork, discipline, and respect.”
