Mother Charged With Murder After Allegedly Shooting 16-Year-Old Son in the Head in Attempt to ‘Scare Him’

Tesha Jenkins and her son Robert (KWCH)

Tesha Jenkins, also known as Tesha Florence, is facing a second-degree murder charge in the tragic death of her 16-year-old son, Robert Florence.

Authorities in Wichita, Kansas, reported that on October 9, Jenkins called 911, admitting she had shot her son, allegedly as a warning shot meant to scare him. Officers found Robert critically injured in their apartment; he later died at a hospital on October 11, Law & Crime reports.

Jenkins initially faced charges of aggravated assault, but they were upgraded following Robert’s passing.

According to statements in the police affidavit, Jenkins expressed frustration over ongoing issues with her son, whom she described as having behavioral challenges. She reportedly admitted that she was agitated by Robert’s decision to skip school and his purported involvement with drugs. Jenkins later claimed she believed the gun was empty when it discharged. The weapon involved was recovered at the scene, loaded with one round in the chamber and two in the magazine.

Jenkins remains in custody on a $1 million bond, with a court appearance scheduled for late October.
