An Amber Alert for a missing 3-year-old girl has been canceled. Delaware officials are now treating the case as a homicide. Nola Dinkins was reported missing on June 10 by her mother, who is accused of giving inaccurate news to the officials during their initial investigation, per PEOPLE.
According to a statement, “Nola’s mother advised that she had pulled over after Nola became upset and was attempting to comfort her when an unknown White male armed with a handgun approached the vehicle and took Nola.”
The mother said the suspect escaped in a dark SUV allegedly driven by a White woman, says police. Following this, an #AmberAlert was issued for the toddler, and law enforcement, including the FBI, worked through the night to investigate the incident.
“As a result of that investigation, detectives determined the initial account of the incident given by the mother was false… The Amber Alert is now canceled, and there is no danger to the public,” officials said.
The Maryland State Police are now treating the case as a homicide investigation. A body has been located in Cecil County, according to spokesperson Elena Russo, who stated that they are awaiting to confirm the identity. No suspects have been named, and investigators previously searched the area where the child is believed to reside
