Chapman Hamborg, a 33-year-old artist and father of four from Huntington Beach, California, was shocked when a neighbor called the police on him during a routine walk with his newborn daughter on April 22. Dressed in a worn Patagonia jacket, stained jeans, and slippers, Hamborg looked “tired,” but never expected to be mistaken for a kidnapper.
Sharing the story on Instagram, Hamborg said he’d taken baby Florence for walks before to give his wife, Hannah, a break. But this time, a concerned woman, believing he was homeless, allegedly followed him and contacted authorities.
According to NBC Los Angeles, police later arrived at his home and questioned him. “Nope, not homeless,” Hamborg recalled telling them. “Just a tired dad.” His wife confirmed his identity, and everyone laughed.
The story went viral, gaining over 50 million views. Speaking to People, Hamborg revealed he never received an apology but holds no ill will. “I’d thank her for being vigilant,” he said, hoping to meet the neighbor.
Using the attention for good, Hamborg partnered with United Way of Orange County to raise funds for homelessness. He donated 20% of the proceeds from his artwork “Unseen Path.” He said, “Rather than turning it into a divisive thing, I’d like to use it to build community.”
