Nelly Furtado says she’s stepping away from music after facing a wave of body-shaming comments on social media, as reported by PageSix.

The singer made the announcement Friday in an emotional Instagram post celebrating the 25th anniversary of her debut album, Whoa, Nelly!. She shared a photo of herself from 2000 alongside a recent clip from her summer performance in Berlin.

“25 years later, my music has reached a whole new generation of fans and I couldn’t be happier about that,”

Furtado, 46, wrote.

While reflecting on her return to performing, she said it’s time for a new chapter. “All this aside, I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future and pursue some other creative and personal endeavours that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life,” she explained.

Furtado said she’s loved her career and plans to keep writing songs, calling it a lifelong passion.

“I have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career,”

she wrote, adding that she’ll

“identify as a songwriter forever.”

The

“Promiscuous”

singer closed her message with heartfelt thanks to her fans:

“I’m grateful for all the years of fun, community and wonder. Endless gratitude to anyone who has ever listened and vibrated with my music and attended any of my shows.”

She ended the post saying,

“Thank you and goodnight!”
