Gina LaPlaca, the mayor of Lumberton Township, was arrested on March 17 for allegedly driving under the influence with her young child in the car. The incident occurred on St. Patrick’s Day, just days after she resigned from a separate job in another town.

A fellow driver witnessed LaPlaca’s vehicle swerving dangerously on the road, nearly colliding with a utility pole, according to WPVI. Concerned, they recorded the incident and submitted the footage to authorities. Police later traced the car to LaPlaca’s home, where they found her and her toddler inside the vehicle. Officers also discovered an open alcohol container.

When questioned, LaPlaca reportedly admitted to drinking while driving. She underwent a field sobriety test, which led to her arrest. She now faces multiple charges, including DUI, reckless driving, and child endangerment. She was released with a summons and is expected to appear in court on April 28.

Her husband, Jason Carty, acknowledged her struggles with addiction and asked the public to show compassion. He emphasized her dedication to the community and urged people not to judge her solely on this incident.

Gina LaPlaca has an extensive professional background, including government and private-sector roles. She was elected to the Lumberton Township Committee in 2020 and has served as mayor since 2021. Before her resignation on March 10, she was the business administrator for Neptune Township. She continues to be involved in politics as the chairwoman of the Lumberton Democrats.
