Jim Zullo, a Hall of Fame girls’ basketball coach in upstate New York, has been dismissed after an incident involving his star player following a heartbreaking championship loss.
Northville High School lost 43-37 to La Fargeville at Hudson Valley Community College during Friday night’s Class D state final. After the game, senior Hailey Monroe, who had scored 12 points, stood with her teammates in tears. Zullo was caught on camera approaching Monroe from behind, yanking her ponytail, and appearing to scold her. Teammate Ahmya Tompkins, who is also Zullo’s great-niece, intervened.
The Northville Central School District swiftly condemned Zullo’s actions, announcing on social media that he would no longer coach for the school. The district emphasized its commitment to upholding respect and integrity within its athletic programs.
Zullo later issued a public apology through NBC affiliate WNYT, acknowledging that his behavior was unacceptable. He expressed regret to Monroe, her family, the team, and the school community, admitting that no coach should put their hands on a player.
Board of Education members refrained from additional comments, with President Carolyn Wilcox stating that their focus was on supporting student-athletes during this difficult time.
Jim Zullo, a former state champion coach, had returned to coaching at Northville after retiring, following encouragement from his late wife. His son, Sam Zullo, a high school basketball coach in Connecticut, stated that their family is working through the situation privately.
