ABC News obtained details from a felony complaint that stated that Thomas J. Mascia Jr. had called in for backup after claiming to be hit. On October 30, the former New York State trooper confirmed that a Hispanic male inside a black Dodge Charger hit him during a routine check, around 11:45 pm.
The officer was quickly whisked off to a hospital, where he received treatment. Once Mascia Jr. was safe, the police commenced a thorough search to track down the black Dodge Charger vehicle their officer reported. But the New York State Police Department soon discovered that it was all staged.
Interestingly, Mascia had arrived on the scene earlier to plant about nine shell casings. Next, he moved to another location where he shot himself before returning to the scene of the crime. Three months after the incident, the officer turned himself in while tendering his resignation letter.
He has since been slapped with charges including tampering with physical evidence, official misconduct and falsely reporting an incident. The disgraced officer is likely to spend 1 to 3 years behind bars following his hearing. Thomas Mascia Jr’s parents are also facing the law after the cops found $800,000 cash and an assault-style firearm inside their home.
The pair, Thomas Sr. and Dorothy were arrested and charged with criminal possession of a firearm. But they have since been released. Like his son, Mascia, Thomas Sr. wasn’t an exemplary cop. Although he didn’t stage an attack, the former officer was dismissed from the force following his involvement in a cocaine ring.
