A disturbing incident has emerged from Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, where a nurse is accused of causing a broken neck in a premature infant, Jahxy Peets, shortly after his birth.
Jahxy was born on June 12, 2022, weighing just 3 pounds. Due to his premature birth, he required specialized care in the NICU, Law & Crime reports.
According to a statement from Jahxy’s family, the injury occurred during what they described as a routine handling by a nurse during a physical examination.
The infant died November 25, 2022.
“We were shocked when we were informed that our baby suffered such a severe injury,” said Gianna Lopera, Jahxy’s mother. “To think that this could happen during a simple check-up is unfathomable. We trusted the medical staff to care for him.”
According to a complaint, “There is no note in the medical record documenting the excessive-force event which caused this traumatic injury, and no indication in the medical record that an investigation was performed to identify and bring to justice the individual who caused this devastating injury,” the complaint says.
“Furthermore, there is not evidence that police were notified that an individual with access to the Orland Health NICU had broken Jahxy’s neck and then put her back in the incubator without notifying anyone.”
Gianna Lopera and the dad, Jahmiah Peets say that not only was Jahxy’s injury “either not recognized or was not reported,” it also “appears from the records that an attempt to cover up the cause of Jahxy’s injury was made, as there is no mention of a precipitating event in the medical record.”
