Sadly, a police chief’s toddler daughter tragically died after being attacked by a law enforcement K-9 named Draco at their home in Colorado. Officials found the 3-year-old child unresponsive in the yard, per the Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office. The reasons behind the attack are unclear, and officials are still investigating the incident to find out what transpired, per the New York Post.
The unnamed girl is the daughter of Burlington Police Chief Nathan Hill. He was not home during the attack, officials said.
Burlington Police Department said, “We our deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred within the city limits of Burlington, CO. Our hearts go out to Chief Nate Hill, his wife and family for the loss of their little girl, who was victim of a dog attack.”
Emergency medical staff quickly took the child to the hospital, where she was declared dead. The German Shepherd was taken to the Burlington dog pound and put down. Police said Draco was a narcotics detection K-9 but wasn’t active during the attack.
Carson Sheriff Travis Beldon said, “He’s trained for detection. He’s not in any way trained for patrol work, apprehension, anything that would involve biting… So it is very uncharacteristic for him to attack in this fashion.”
He was retired after Cheyenne County ended its K-9 program and donated to the Burlington Police. Hill had him at home during the attack.
