Police Officer Under Fire After Lighting Cigar While Straddling Suspect During Arrest At Nightclub

A St. Louis police officer is under investigation after a video went viral showing him lighting a cigar while straddling a detained suspect. The incident occurred outside Marquee Restaurant & Lounge and was captured on footage uploaded online. The officer’s identity remains undisclosed, per the New York Post

Onlookers and the suspect playfully offered lighters to the officer while the incident took place.

A bystander who recorded the encounter can be heard saying,

“Pull your lighter out, bro… No, don’t pull it out. They might think you got a gun.

While lying on his back, the suspect tried to free his hands, but the officer quickly grabbed his arms and limited his mobility. A witness urged the officer to at least put a hat on the suspect.

The officer, who was working a second job at a popular downtown St. Louis nightspot, was asked by lounge staffers to remove the man. The suspect was apprehended for trespassing and resisting arrest. Body camera footage has not been made public.

Following the viral video, the SLMPD initiated an internal investigation to gain a clearer understanding of the situation, its lead-up, and subsequent events. Luckily, there were no reported injuries, according
