A man sparked a debate by sharing how he proposed to his girlfriend but then said he wanted to wait five years to marry her, hurting her feelings in the process. The unnamed man wrote this on the TIFU (or “Today I F—– Up”) forum on Reddit, per PEOPLE.
He mentioned that he and his 20-year-old fiancée have been together for six years since their teenage years. He observed that some women find it frustrating to remain girlfriends for a long period.
He explained,
“I understand how bad that can be, and I wanted my girlfriend to know I take our relationship seriously… At the same time I’m far from being financially stable enough to get married.”
He came up with a solution to propose to her now and wait 5 more years to tie the knot.
“That way, we could tell people we’re engaged, and she wouldn’t have to be a girlfriend for 11 years before becoming a fiancée,”
he explained.
In his post, he shared that after proposing on vacation, his fiancée asked about their wedding plans. He told her they shouldn’t plan yet since they’d wed in five years, which ultimately made her sad.
“After some time she said she wanted to talk about it on Friday, that it was okay, and she wanted to enjoy the rest of our vacation,”
the 21-year-old shared.
He revealed,
“I think I tried to fix a problem that didn’t exist and ended up hurting her.”
He continued on to say,
“Looking back she never complained about being a girlfriend for six years, I don’t know why I thought this was necessary.”
In an updated post, he noted that it was a miscommunication between him and his fiancée also mentioning that he showed her the post.
“She said she wouldn’t mind being my girlfriend for 10 years because we are still young and it didn’t matter to her… She mentioned that I could have explained my idea to her before proposing, but in the end, it was fine,”
he penned.
