If there’s one thing that black churches got, it’s time and folding chairs for repast. And the way the #ProudBoys are talking reckless, there’s going to be some slow singing and flower bringing.
In a recent legal development, the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Washington, D.C., was awarded control over the Proud Boys’ trademark after the group failed to pay a $2.8 million judgment, the NYT reports.
This judgment stemmed from a 2020 incident where members of the Proud Boys vandalized the church during a pro-Trump rally, tearing down and burning a #BlackLivesMatter banner.
Following the court’s decision, former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who was serving a 22-year prison sentence for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot and was recently pardoned by former President #DonaldTrump upon his return to office, expressed defiance.
In a statement, Tarrio said, “We went through hell, and I’m gonna tell you, it was worth it, because what we stood for and what those guys stood for was what we’ve been fighting for.”
Tario added a veiled threat, “Though the corrupt judicial system unjustly confined me two weeks ago, my faith in Jesus Christ has set me free. I pray for their sake they do not suffer the same fate as Pharaoh. However, let it be known: retribution is inevitable.”
In response to Tarrio’s remarks, Rev. William H. Lamar IV, pastor of the Metropolitan AME Church, emphasized the church’s resilience. He stated, “We will not be moved by fear or threats. Our faith and commitment to justice remain stronger than ever.”
