In a heartfelt Instagram post, Shannon Amos announced that a public memorial and celebration of life for her father, actor John Amos, will be held on November 23.
This comes after Shannon and other family members expressed disbelief and frustration over Amos reportedly being buried without her and other family members’ knowledge, The JasmineBrand reports.
On October 23, Shannon shared that a memorial for her beloved dad will be held at the Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts in East Orange, New Jersey.
The location holds special significance as it’s John Amos’s alma mater, and the event will feature notable speakers, including East Orange Mayor Ted R. Green, who will share personal stories and tributes.
Shannon described her father as a beloved humanitarian and cultural icon who was admired globally as “America’s Father” for his impactful roles in Good Times, Roots, and Coming to America, as well as his off-screen advocacy for children with disabilities and other causes.
John Amos, who passed away on August 21 at the age of 84, had kept his death private initially, with the news only reaching Shannon and the public on October 1 when her brother, K.C. Amos, announced it.
K.C. shared that their father died of natural causes and expressed gratitude for the actor’s legacy and contributions to television and film.
Shannon acknowledged her family’s grief, noting that they are working through “a wave of emotions and uncertainties surrounding his passing” but find solace in celebrating his life and legacy.
