A convicted sex offender who was released from prison two weeks ago is accused of posing as a doctor and sexually assaulting a student at Orangewood Elementary School in Phoenix on Nov. 19, per the NY Post. Police say 25-year-old Abel Kai Gblah entered the campus and lured a young girl into a classroom.
Phoenix police said they were called after administrators reported an incident on campus.
“When officers arrived, they learned an unauthorized man had made it onto school grounds and lured a grade-school-aged girl into a classroom where he sexually assaulted her,”
officials said.
“At some point, the student was able to push the man away. He then ran from the scene before officers arrived.”
FOX 10 Phoenix reported that Gblah pretended to be a doctor and told the girl he needed to examine her. Police later arrested him, and prosecutors said he is a registered sex offender with two 2021 convictions for sexual conduct with a minor.
The school district said the campus went into lockdown for more than an hour.
“He was on campus for approximately 10 minutes and during that time, he made inappropriate contact with a student,”
the district wrote. An internal review found Gblah entered through an unlocked lobby door and walked in with a tardy student.
A staff member has been placed on leave as the district reviews safety procedures.
“We understand how alarming this situation has been,”
Principal Emily Paterson wrote. Gblah is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond, with a preliminary hearing set for Dec. 1.
