In a surprising move, Rolling Stone defended Doechii against the vitriol she has been experiencing online for a while now. The outlet claimed that the hate against the rapper is unwarranted and driven by patriarchal culture. It also blamed racism and a lack of understanding of how things run in the music industry. Doechii’s father also defended her, saying the public misunderstood her comments, which sparked the backlash.

Rolling Stone Defends Doechii After “Straight Men” Comment Backlash

Doechii has been facing heavy criticism online since her comments about straight men went viral. The rapper left the internet divided after she revealed her preference against heterosexual men. The comment that sparked the debate happened during Doechii’s appearance on Hot Ones Versus. During the interview, DJ Miss Milan asked the songwriter to reveal one of her biggest dating red flags. The 26-year-old, who is openly queer and bisexual, then wrote “A straight man” on her board.

Rolling Stone stepped in to support Doechii following the wave of online backlash that accompanied her disclosure. It opined that misogyny, queerphobia, and colorism fueled the debates.

“If the disdain is strictly about not liking the music, that’s fine. No one has to enjoy everything. But the loudest online discourse feels more like projections of misogyny, queerphobia, colorism, and a fundamental misunderstanding of how the industry works,” Rolling Stone said in its defense of Doechii.

Rolling Stone Blames Incel Culture For Doechii Comment

The news outlet also opined that other allegations against the rapper, including her being an industry plant, were unfounded attacks. “She’s often faced commenters calling her an industry plant, an attack that popped up again this weekend when a clip from a recent First We Feast appearance went viral,” the outlet stated. Rolling Stone added that Doechii’s comments enraged men who were already antagonists to women. It asserted that this group of people failed to acknowledge their contribution to the fear the rapper may feel around straight men.

“Somehow, few, if any of them, acknowledged the rise of incel culture and publicly available stats on gender violence that would justify an openly queer woman being cautious of a straight man. The outrage, insults, and lack of accountability her comments garnered proved her point. Only those blind to the reality of patriarchy as a violent agenda would consider critique and pushback to it as an agenda of its own,” the outlet surmised.

Rolling Stone added of the criticism toward Doechii:

“Most disappointingly though, some of the pushback feels rooted in her being a darkskin, queer Black woman. In this anti-Black country, that’s unfortunately three strikes against an artist.”

Doechii’s Dad Defends Her

Doechii’s dad also waded into the controversy alongside Rolling Stone to defend his daughter. He noted that the singer’s disclosure stemmed from her personal experience and was not about all men. Doechii has been open about her experience of dating a man who presented as straight but was secretly bisexual. The encounter inspired the rapper’s song Denial is a River.

“It seems like this is going way over people’s heads,’ her dad wrote on his Instagram Stories, according to Onsite.

He revealed that the comment was rooted in Doechii’s personal experience, “not a blanket statement about all straight men.”

While Rolling Stone’s stepping in to defend Doechii is commendable, it has done nothing to ease the allegations against her. Many have now determined that the singer is an industry plant, as they find Rolling Stone’s actions suspicious.
