A tropical cyclone has made several cruise ships stay far out at sea, according to PEOPLE. Tropical Cyclone Alfred is expected to hit Brisbane, Australia, late Friday or early Saturday. As a result, cruise ships from Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and others will either ride out the storm at sea or go to different ports, as reported by 9 News Australia and Daily Cargo News (DCN).

A tropical cyclone is like a hurricane or typhoon. It forms over warm water and brings strong winds, heavy rain, and big waves, among other dangers, reports note. The Port of Brisbane told Carnival Cruise Lines’ Luminosa and Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas—both of which left from the city—that they could not dock in Brisbane as planned on Thursday or Friday, according to DCN.

Carnival Luminosa, which is currently sailing in the South Pacific, has decided to avoid Brisbane until “possibly” March 8, according to a statement from the cruise line to PEOPLE. In the meantime, the ship is “staying a safe distance from the storm to minimize discomfort for our guests.” Carnival also confirmed to PEOPLE that some trips planned for this weekend have been canceled.

“Given its current track, the storm is expected to directly impact the Brisbane area in the coming days and the port is now closed. Regrettably, we had no option but to cancel Carnival Luminosa’s 3-day cruise planned to depart on March 6. Guests will receive a full refund for their cruise fare and all pre-purchased items.”

The Street reports that Royal Caribbean has informed guests that their trip will be impacted. The Port of Brisbane announced on Wednesday that winds may exceed 75 MPH and could reach up to 96 MPH in the coming days.
