Ryan Reynolds is famous for his comedic timing and sense of humor. Hence, it didn’t come as a shock when he made a joke at “SNL” 50. The actor and his wife joined a room full of actors at the 50th-anniversary special of the long-running show. However, Reynolds took things up a notch when he made a joke out of his wife, Blake Lively’s sexual assault lawsuit. While many found the joke funny, critics have slammed the Deadpool actor for his insensitivity surrounding a legal case. Also, some think he may have jeopardized Lively’s chances in court.
Ryan Reynold Makes Fun of Blake Lively’s Sexual Assault Lawsuit
Ryan Reynolds’ joke on Sunday about Blake Lively’s sexual assault lawsuit got many in stitches, especially as the room was filled with those who understood the allusion. Lively and her It Ends With Us co-star, Justin Baldoni, have been involved in a legal drama since December 2024. Reynolds said he had a question during the Q&A session with “SNL” alums Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and stood up. When Poehler asked, “Ryan Reynolds, how’s it going?” The Green Lantern star replied, “Great.”
Reynolds asked almost immediately with a mischievous face and asked, “Why, what have you heard?” alluding to Lively’s sexual assault lawsuit drama. The audience laughed while his wife looked up at him, shocked. His fellow mischief makers, Fey and Poehler, signified ignorance, raising their hands and shaking their heads.
Naysayers Criticise Ryan Reynolds Over ‘SNL’ Joke
However, in the wake of Reynolds’ joke about Lively’s sexual assault lawsuit, many have been divided over its appropriateness. Some also pointed out that he might have downplayed the severity of his wife’s claims. Political commentator and pundit Candace Owens joined the conversation, writing on X, formerly Twitter,
“Everyone: it is not okay that you used Hollywood actors to ruthlessly bully and humiliate someone under the guise of Deadpool jokes.”
She replied, assuming the actor’s mindset:
“Ryan Reynolds: okay but what if I showed up in a room filled Hollywood actors and made one more joke.”
YouTuber Melanie King also weighed in on X and wrote:
“So natural and hilarious. Whoever decided it was a good idea for Ryan Reynolds to do this needs to be fired. Why would he and Blake Lively think this was cute ? He isn’t funny and now that we know what a low life he is it just makes him even more cringe than he already was.”
Blake Lively’s Sexual Assault Lawsuit Drama
Ryan Reynolds’ joke about Blake Lively’s sexual assault lawsuit is coming a few months after Lively and Baldoni sued each other. Lively filed a sexual harassment complaint with the California Civil Rights Department on December 20, 2024, and sued Baldoni in federal court in New York on December 31. She accused him of sexual harassment while they shot the movie and conducting a smear campaign against her in the media.
Baldoni responded with the same energy, filing a lawsuit against Lively, Reynolds, Lively’s publicist, Leslie Sloane, and Sloane’s PR firm in a U.S. district court in New York for $400 million for defamation. He also sued The New York Times for libel after it published an article in December 2024 about Lively’s allegations. Blake Lively’s sexual assault lawsuit will head to trial on March 9, 2026.
Although some have argued that Ryan Reynolds’ joke about Blake Lively’s sexual assault lawsuit downplays it and may impact the court’s decision, it remains to be seen what will come of it legally.
