The Salt Lake City Police officers’ crime was against the lifeless body of #JasonLloyd, a homeless man, whose death was tagged as “non-suspicious.” The incident occurred in August 2024 and was captured by a body cam.
In the clip shared on February 28 by the Salt Lake City Police Department, about seven officers were on the scene where the body was mishandled. On August 8, around midday, a handful of officers reported to a tent close to Brooklyn Street and Washington Avenue.
Their attention was needed for an investigation of Lloyd’s body. Inside the tent, there was an exchange between an official in the Medical Examiner’s Office, aka the OME contractor, and an officer-in-training, Dakota Smigel.
During the examination, the pair discussed doing a “controlled-popping” on the body of the deceased. Eventually, they agreed, and the OME consented by giving the officer-in-training a knife.
However, before proceeding, Smigel asked if the controlled-popping had been a prank. Amid not being sure, the officer-in-training cut the body of the deceased. Meanwhile, other police officers, including Mark Keep, Paul Mullenax, and Michelle Peterson, had laughed off the officer’s remarks.
Ultimately, these Salt Lake City Police officers advised Smigel to keep the report of the knife away from their conclusion. However, Fox 13 Now claimed that Smigel was persistent and had intended to document his report.
This led the Police Department into an investigation where they judged six out of the seven officers present for their actions. Consequently, they were punished: one officer resigned, another received a warning, and a third was suspended for three days.
