For actress Sheryl Ralph, a happy, nontraditional marriage beats its traditional counterpart. The Abbott Elementary star broke the rules when she and her husband decided to live apart. The pair have been married for 19 years and have never shared a home, but their hearts are still connected. Ralph recently sat down with People to explain why she and Hughes have never lived together.

“I’m very fortunate. The man that I am married to is Senator Vincent Hughes, seventh Senatorial district of Pennsylvania,” the actress announced.

She told the outlet:

“You fall in love with somebody and you realize he’s not leaving his career. He’s not leaving Philadelphia. I’m not leaving Hollywood.” Ralph added that children make the situation more complicated. She said, “When you have children, it’s very difficult.”

How Sheryl Lee Ralph’s Non-Traditional Marriage Works

Ralph and Vincent Hughes found a way to make their marriage work quickly. From the beginning, they decided not to let their love or marriage get in the way of their pursuits and dreams.

“Every two weeks we saw each other, and it has continued to work out well. When I go to see him, I love to see him. When it’s time to leave, ‘Bye-bye. See you soon.’ I’m telling you, life is good,” she disclosed.

She added:

“He has his own life. I have my own life. He has his own real career, I have my own real career. He has his light to stand in, I have my light to stand in. He is not looking at me thinking about status or this or that. He’s doing his thing. I get to do my thing.”

Thankfully, the arrangement has worked out well for the couple, and they will celebrate two decades of marriage in July. The actress told the outlet:

“And some people can’t even get through two,” adding. “So it’s all good. It is all good.”

Sheryl Lee Ralph had gained some experience in marriage before marrying Hughes. The couple met in 2005 after Ralph divorced her first husband, Eric Maurice. Ralph and Maurice said their vows in 1990 and were married until 2001. They share two children, Etienne and Coco. Ralph met Hughes while starring in a Broadway play, Thoroughly Modern Millie. The two married in 2005.

They have been going strong since, and the actress believes in one key to a successful marriage. She told the publication that she learned to address issues directly after her divorce.

“I’ve evolved into [saying], ‘Let’s talk about it.’ If you sit in problems, you get anxious, depressed, and all the juiciness in life starts to dry up. I can’t have that, because all of that will mess with my good looks!” she quipped.

Meanwhile, Sheryl Lee Ralph is preparing to celebrate 20 years with Hughes and promised it will be wonderful.

Although Sheryl Lee Ralph’s marriage style may not be popular, it has worked for her and her husband, considering the length of their marriage and how happy they are together. Hopefully, the couple will continue to be happy together.
