A Florida mother, identified as Esther Thelus, is facing charges of murder and attempted murder after allegedly setting herself and her two young children—a 2-year-old and an 8-month-old—on fire.

The incident tragically resulted in the death of the 8-month-old while Thelus and her 2-year-old sustained severe burns.

Law enforcement officials responded to a disturbing scene at the family’s residence in Broward County after receiving frantic 911 calls.

According to witness statements, Thelus went to a gas station and bought a lighter and gas. She returned, “gathered the two kids and went outside,” her roommate told detectives.

“The roommate’s daughter walked outside to take out some garbage and was greeted with a horrible sight,” Law & Crime reports.

“She’s killing the kids! They are all on fire!” she reportedly exclaimed.

Screams were heard during the incident, with one witness reported. When authorities arrived, they found the children severely burned and rushed them to a nearby hospital, where the infant was later pronounced dead.

According to Law & Crime, investigators are examining Thelus’s background to determine if mental health struggles or other factors may have contributed to the incident, though no motive has been officially confirmed.

“This situation underscores the importance of having accessible mental health resources and community support,” the Sheriff’s Office spokesperson added. “We are committed to seeking justice for the lives affected by this tragedy and supporting the surviving child.”

Esther Thelus will face charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder upon her release from the hospital, with her first court appearance Nov. 12. If convicted, she could face life in prison or the death penalty.
