The Van Buren Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Donald Lucas Sr. from Paw Paw Michigan stole some Christmas gifts. The theft occurred inside his own son’s home, Donald Lucas Jr. who invited his dad to stay with him. Unbeknownst to the single dad of four kids, his dad had an addiction problem.
Authorities maintained that the granddad took the gifts for his four grandkids through the Van Buren County’s Shop. Consequently, he sold them off to secure methamphetamine for himself. Police officers took him into custody for the substance purchase. When his son confirmed the news, expectedly, Donald Jr. was heartbroken.
During an interview with Fox 17, he confessed that he cried and couldn’t believe a loved one would steal from children. Amid getting caught, the 62-year-old was not remorseful as authorities claimed he failed to be cooperative in getting back the gifts reportedly worth more than $1,000.
However, the entire community took it upon themselves to save Christmas for the family. The police, Paw Paw Schools, and others donated money and gift cards to make up for Donald Sr’s inadequacy. In the end, the contributions outweighed the previous amount set for the gifts. Sources revealed that each child will receive about $500 worth of gifts. This has left their father incredibly happy.
The police have stepped in for more than one family this Christmas. A source claimed that the Sheriff’s Office helped five families to do some Christmas shopping. They raised funds through local events including a fair in the community.
