A student from Spelman College is behind bars following a wrong-way accident early Friday morning, as reported by WSBTV Channel 2 News. There were no fatalities however, a passenger is in the hospital with serious injuries, authorities revealed.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:20 a.m. on I-75/I-85 close to the North Avenue exit, leading to a closure of the interstate for several hours. A state trooper observed a 2012 Mercedes-Benz traveling north in the southbound HOV lane. The trooper attempted to pull over the driver, identified as 20-year-old Addison Thornton, but she had already collided with a 2018 Buick Encore.
The passenger in Thornton’s vehicle was rushed to the hospital due to serious injuries. Troopers reported that Thornton did not pass a DUI test and was found in possession of a fake driver’s license. She is facing charges of driving under the influence, driving on the wrong side of the roadway, possession of a fraudulent driver’s license, serious injury by motor vehicle, and underage consumption. Spelman College has confirmed that both Thornton and her 17-year-old passenger are students at the institution.
“We are aware that two Spelman students were involved in an off-campus traffic accident on March 7, 2025. At this time, we are gathering more information and have been in touch with the families of both students,” a spokesperson wrote in a statement.
