Support groups guarantee that a person doesn’t go through a problem alone. Such groups exist to provide support and cushion the effects of the issue at hand. People who go through divorce, heartbreak, mental illness, grief, and substance abuse find support groups useful. So how can something so good have a flip side?

Pros Of Support Groups

Such groups offer a safe space to share personal problems. There is always the possibility of finding another person who can relate well to personal difficulties. This may be due to their own experiences or knowledge. Here are the advantages of being in a support group.

Zero Isolation

The fundamental aim of support groups is to show that a group of people share a similar burden. They also hope for a cure while cutting each other some slack. People in support groups are less judgmental so that would help in opening up. One way to solve a problem is by being honest. This is what happens when people can connect to the stories of others.

Always a Safe Place

Since there is zero loneliness and isolation people often come out of their shells. In support groups, everyone is considered family. This makes the participants comfortable to share their experiences.

One Can Offer Help

Apart from being the one asking for help, a person can also render help. This could come in different forms. Either by listening, advising due to experiences, or encouraging.

Reasons To Avoid Support Groups

The negative aspect of a support group isn’t as overwhelming as the positive. However, it is important to take note of them. The issues would include:

Everyone Needs Help

It is a group with lots of needy people. One person is going through one problem or the other. So there may be negative energy in the background. But this depends largely on the facilitators. If they provide ground rules on what to share and how to share it, people may be energized. Their hearts will gladden and their faces brighten. Though simple, not listening to problems often can change one’s mental conditioning.

People Might Misuse Connections

Since everyone is usually vulnerable, they may begin to connect wrongly. The need to be heard and looked at could be taken advantage of. While some people may genuinely strike a bond, it may be more difficult for others. Imagine entering a committed friendship or relationship with a person who would later be MIA. Although solid bonds are found in support groups, it is best to act when one’s emotions are in place. This is better in the healing period.

Support Group May Be Religious

It should never pander to a religious teaching rather such groups must promote spiritual healing. A person’s liberation, mentally, emotionally, and physically is what such groups do. However, some poorly managed groups tend to propagate a particular religion. This makes it harder for people of different spiritual backgrounds to heal.

Final Thoughts

Support groups are there to assist in healing. Once it begins to act contrary it is best to call the attention of the facilitators. If this doesn’t work, try to leave the group. Staying back due to fear of a fresh start can be as injurious as the initial problem.
