Two Teenage Sisters Reportedly Drowned After Being Swept Away By Strong Current Off Coney Island Beach

Two teenage girls, identified as Aisha Mohammed, 18, and Zainab Mohammed, 17, went for a swim at Coney Island on the Fourth of July weekend and sadly drowned. Their family members, who are deeply saddened by the tragic incident, shared that the girls were sisters and were out enjoying their time in the ocean when they disappeared, per the NY Post

The police were alerted around 8:10 p.m. on Friday, and a search was conducted. The girls were found on the shoreline at 9:15 p.m. and immediately taken to Coney Island Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

“They were just trying to have fun out there,”

the girls’ uncle Tahir Mohammed, 48, told The Post.

“They thought they were just gonna have their last swim and come out.”

It was only their second time at the beach, according to their cousin, Julia Mohammad. On Saturday, outside their grandmother’s home in the Bronx, a small group of family and friends gathered, bringing food and drinks. Meanwhile, Tani Ibrahim Ali, Aisha and Zainab’s mother, was upstairs grieving in the apartment.

“She can’t speak, she’s beside herself,”

    Tahir Mohammed said.

Julia shared that Aisha noticed her younger sister Zaina struggling in the ocean and bravely went in to help. Another male cousin also jumped in to assist, but unfortunately, they couldn’t save the sisters. The girls were reportedly swept away by a strong current, according to one of the group members.

According to the city’s Department of Parks, lifeguards are available at the beach from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It’s important to note that swimming after those hours are not permitted.

‘Sinking Ferry’ 18 Persons Drown In The DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

According to Africa News, At least 18 people have drowned in western Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after a riverboat carrying more than 300 passengers split in two, a local police official said on Tuesday.

Most of those on the boat were local officials, according to Martin Nakweti, acting police chief in Oshwe territory of Mai-Ndombe province, where the incident occurred. Police and divers searched the Lukenie River for the missing passengers, while authorities awaited more information to help them assess the causes of the boat’s failure.

Residents of Congo’s riverside communities use wooden ferries called

    “balanieres”

To get from their homes to their workplaces in areas where there are often no roads. Shipwrecks are also common in remote parts of the country, notably in Mai-Ndombe, a province full of lakes and rivers located 400 km east of the capital Kinshasa.

According to the local assembly, David Bisaka, a local official, drowned in April after his boat sank on the Mfimi River in the same province.

According to Bovic Ngampenga, president of a civil society organization in Oshwe, the ferry that sank on Tuesday was overloaded, in poor condition, and

“should no longer be in service”.

On August 29th, 2021, Lancaster, Pennsylvania woman Autumn Lynn Vossler reported her 5-year-old son, Harmon, missing. Many hours later, police discovered the boy’s body in the Susquehanna River. It was initially filed as an accidental death.

We never saw you- we snuck out of the house!”

After reviewing the case and investigating it further, the Susquehanna Regional Police Department arrested Vossler December 29th. She’s reportedly been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter and four counts of felony endangering the welfare of children. After Sheriff Refused To Prosecute, DA Files Charges Against Swim Instructor In Drowning Death Of 4-Year-Old Boy

On June 14th, 4-year-old Israel “Izzy” Scott was on his second day of swimming lessons in Waynesboro, Georgia. 10 minutes after his instructor, Lexie Tenhuisen, had seen him, Izzy’s body was found in the bottom of the pool. Despite a nurse attempting CPR, Izzy was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, Atlanta Black Star reported.

During the lessons, which were held at a private residence, Tenhuisen would not allow parents to be in the swimming area. Many remained in their vehicles as their children participated. It was in her car where Izzy’s mother, Dori Scott, was told about her son’s drowning.

“I’m an emotional rollercoaster,” Dori said in an interview with CBS affiliate News 12. “Some days I’m crying looking at pictures and looking at videos. He was just friendly, very sweet, very smart. He was just starting to learn how to read and write. He just loved adventure. He wasn’t scared of nothing.”

Almost 7 months after Izzy’s passing, Lexie Tenhuisen has finally been charged with involuntary manslaughter, as instructed by Burke County District Attorney’s Jared T. Williams after “months of “dedicated inquiry, investigation, and legal analysis.” Dori Scott celebrated the arrest, stating that her family continues to feel a void in their every day lives. “All three of my kids are different, not having his little, caring energy around is- even our car rides are different,” she explains. “Because everybody feels that void.”
