Passengers On Delta Flight To Portland Report Bleeding Ears and Noses Caused By Pressurization Issues, Reports Say

A Delta Airlines flight going from Salt Lake City to Portland on Sunday morning had to turn back shortly after taking off. The plane couldn’t maintain pressure above 10,000 feet, creating a scary situation for the 140 people on board. Two passengers told KSL, a news station in Salt Lake City, that some people’s ears and noses began to bleed during the flight, per CNN

Jaclyn Blain, who was flying to Oregon for work with some coworkers, said that soon after takeoff, she and her colleague heard strange noises and felt the plane dropping. Their ears began to pop, and she saw people around her holding their ears and noses. Some were crying, while others said they felt dizzy and had headaches. A baby was crying from the pain. Blain’s colleague told KSL it felt like someone had stabbed her in the ear.

    “It was scary,”

    Blain told KSL.

“You just don’t know what’s wrong. (My colleague) put her finger in her ear and was like, ‘Oh my god, my ear’s bleeding.’ And then they got my other colleague two rows behind me. I look back and he’s in tears.”

Paramedics were on standby to help passengers when they landed at Salt Lake International Airport. USA Today reported that 10 passengers needed evaluation or treatment. Blain’s colleague shared with KSL that doctors at the hospital told her that her eardrum had burst.

The airline issued the following statement to KSL about the flight,

“Delta flight 1203 from SLC to PDX experienced a pressurization issue in-flight that resulted in an air return to SLC. Customers have been accommodated on another aircraft. We sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay of their travels. The safety of our customers and people remains Delta’s most important priority.”
