Physically-Impaired Street Sweepers Seek Pay Rise, Says The Pay Isn’t Enough

According To Punch, some physically challenged people allegedly employed by the Lagos State Waste Management Authority as street sweepers have called on the agency to increase their salary. Some of the physically challenged people who spoke with the news outlet on Monday in the Oshodi area of the state, allegedly earn between N5,000 and N30,000 monthly while some said they relied solely on donations from the public. One employee, Sayo Ajayi, showed the news outlet his ID card which was said to have been issued by LAWMA. He revealed that his N5,000 salary was too small to sustain him and his family. Ajayi, who said he was a beggar for seven years before joining LAWMA, added that it was difficult for him to climb the bridge to carry out his task, but he had no choice since he needed to cater for his family. He said, “Some years ago, my colleague and I were paid N12,000 to share and the official who was bringing the money then would remove N1,000 from it but now they pay N5,000 directly to my account. It is not easy surviving with N5,000 per month, especially in the current economic situation.” Also speaking with PUNCH Metro, Alowonle, who claimed to have been working for LAWMA for 12 years said he was being paid N30,000 monthly but the amount was not sufficient to cater for his family’s needs. Reacting, LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs Folashade Kadiri, said the organization was committed to ensuring that its workers, regardless of their abilities, receive fair and competitive compensation for their efforts and that no street sweepers are earning N5,000. #Clique what are your thoughts on this?

Paternity Testing Fiasco: Uganda’s Families Left in Turmoil

BBC Focus On Africa Reports that there is a sharp increase in the number of men in Uganda seeking paternity tests, fears are growing it could break up families and leave children psychologically scarred. The issue has been a hot topic of debate in the country since a tabloid newspaper published a story claiming that a well-known business tycoon – who had several wives and mistresses – had a row with one of his spouses, prompting him to request paternity tests that reportedly said he was the biological father of only 15 of his 25 children. “We have seen social media messages where people think paternity tests are disruptive to families and can cause gender-based violence. We want to make sure that doesn’t happen because of the result which is given,” Dr Kyabayinze told the BBC. Microbiologist Freddie Bwanga said the state laboratory where he works has not seen a major increase in requests for testing, but greater awareness now exists around the issue. His experience over the years shows that 60-70% of tests prove a biological link between the father and child. As for the 30% to 40% who found they were not, the outcome was often beneficial in “helping children to be settled where they are born”. Testing is better than relying on age-old cultural practices – like smearing cow fat on the umbilical cord, and putting it in a woven basket filled with water. Uganda’s state minister for primary health care said there was no need for men to seek paternity tests. “Anything that you don’t know can’t kill you. If you don’t know that this is not your child, it won’t break your heart. But when you find out your heart will be broken,” Margaret Muhanga said. #Clique what are your thoughts?

Jury Determines 2014 Will Found In Aretha Franklin’s Couch Is Valid, Reports Say

A jury ruled in favor of the late Aretha Franklin’s newly found will for her estate, putting an end to the ongoing battle between her children, TMZ reported.  The legendary Queen of Soul passed away from pancreatic cancer in August 2018. It was thought that Franklin died without a known will however that changed in 2019 when a handwritten letter was found in a book hidden in the creases of her couch.  The five-page will, dated March 31, 2014, was brought to trial to determine whether the 2010 draft or the newfound document would be recognized. As of Tuesday, a Michigan jury concluded that the 2014 document is indeed plausible.   In the new will Aretha appoints her sons Kecalf and Edward as executors of her $6 million estate. “Teddy,” AKA Ted White II, their brother who was called to be the executor in the 2010 version, the name was apparently crossed out of the new will. According to TMZ, the 2010 document ordered Kecalf and Edward to “take business classes, and get a degree or certificate to benefit from Aretha’s estate.” However, based on the 2014 interpretation the men no longer have that as a requirement. #Clique, what are your thoughts?

Florida Sheriff’s Office Arrests 12 Family Members Who Are Allegedly Connected To A Local Drug Trafficking Operation

Rogers Family

Last week, Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested 12 family members across three generations in the Winter Haven area. Fox News reports the suspects have supposed involvement in a local family-run drug trafficking operation. The joint investigation with Highlands County Sheriff’s Office looked into the infamous Rogers family because of their long connection to narcotics sales. This investigation ended with the multi-generational arrest of nine adults and three juveniles from the Rogers clan. In the raid, police seized 1,366 grams of methamphetamine, 980 grams of cocaine, 900 grams of MDMA (ecstasy), 224 grams of fentanyl, 158 grams of marijuana, 9 grams of Oxycodone, 202 prescription pills, and a firearm. According to PCSO, the recovered drugs’ street value is around $139,000. Additionally, they recovered enough fentanyl to kill about 96,000 people. Last Thursday, the sheriff’s office simultaneously carried out search warrants for the family’s three locations in Inwood. Investigators uncovered drugs at each spot. At the first location, deputies arrested Odia Rogers (69), his girlfriend, Theresa Prince (59), and his daughter, Tameka Rogers (31). All suspects face drug-related charges. Odia’s son, Rafel Rogers (39), was arrested at the second location. He faces drug and gun-related charges. Lastly, officials arrested Odia’s grandson, Jordan Rogers (21), two unnamed 16-year-old females, and an unnamed 15-year-old male. They also face drug-related charges. However, one of the 16-year-olds faces an additional drug trafficking charge. Investigators connected the last three suspects – Gerard Hall (32), Alpavin Tucker (36), and Dominique Rogers (28) – to the operation earlier this year. These individuals are already behind bars just like Kenneth “Pop” Rogers, who is head of the family-run operation. “Members of the Rogers family are very well known to law enforcement and have been arrested many times over the years. They have been a cancer in the Inwood community for a long time, exposing families there to unwanted drug activity, gangs, violence, and more. We want these families to know that we’re doing everything in our power to put a stop to it,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. #Clique, what are your thoughts?
