Man Wins $167 Million Powerball Jackpot with His Mother, Then Ends Up in Jail Just 4 Days Later

A Kentucky man made history by winning the largest lottery prize in the state, only to find himself in jail just four days later, as reported by PEOPLE

On Saturday evening, April 26, James Farthing found out that his $2 Powerball ticket for his mother was a winner. They won a huge jackpot of $167.3 million. This is the biggest win in Kentucky’s lottery history, according to the Kentucky Lottery.

Farthing, 50, collected the winnings alongside his mother, Linda Grizzle, and posed for photos with the large check on Monday, April 28. The Georgetown native told to the Kentucky Lottery that “it’s going to be a good Mother’s Day” and also mentioned plans to “pay off my debt.” The celebration quickly came to an end on Wednesday, April 30, when Farthing found himself under arrest.

As stated by USA Today, Farthing was at the TradeWinds Resort in St. Pete Beach, Florida, when a brawl erupted, during which he allegedly struck another guest in the face. His girlfriend was reportedly also involved in a confrontation with other hotel guests, according to USA Today.

He reportedly tried to resist arrest by running from the hotel but was caught, as reported by the outlet.

Farthing faces one felony charge for battery against a law enforcement officer, along with two misdemeanor charges for battery and resisting arrest, in addition to a parole violation, according to court documents reviewed by PEOPLE.

  • Homeless Man Shocked to Learn He Won $1M on Scratch-Off Ticket

Homeless Man Shocked to Learn He Won $1M on Scratch-Off Ticket

A “loyal customer” of a downtown San Luis Obispo liquor store recently won a $1 million prize from a California Lottery scratcher, as reported by The Independent

    Life Changing News

According to another local establishment, the winner was homeless and had been living on the streets. On Friday, Sandy’s Deli-Liquor shared on Instagram that they sold a Triple Red 777 scratcher that won the $1 million prize. The business also posted a photo of the winning ticket along with a sign that reads, “millionaire made here.”

A representative from the California Lottery stated that they can not “confirm or acknowledge any big wins like this until the person who won comes forward and their claim is thoroughly vetted by our security and law enforcement division.”

They indicated that this process typically takes about six to eight weeks. However, it may take longer if any unusual circumstances arise.

On Monday, Sandy’s manager Wilson Samaan shared with The Tribune that he was present when the man who purchased the winning ticket. Samaan stated that the man bought two 777 scratchers along with some smaller ones on the evening of April 6 for a total of $25. He checked one of the 777 tickets right away and won $200, which the cashier cashed out for him.

He didn’t check the other ticket until he returned first thing the next morning while Samaan was on duty. Initially, Samaan said the man thought he had won $100,000—still a significant amount—but then Samaan pointed out that there was an additional zero, bringing the total to an incredible $1 million prize.

Since then, Samaan has been assisting the man with the verification process for the win through the California Lottery, providing photo and video evidence of the purchase. He even offered to drive the man, who doesn’t have a car, to the nearest office in Fresno to redeem the scratcher, rather than risking it getting lost in the mail.

  • Mega Millions Ticket Price Set To Rise To $5, Offering Larger Jackpots and Better Winning Odds

Mega Millions Ticket Price Set To Rise To $5, Offering Larger Jackpots and Better Winning Odds

Starting next April, Mega Millions tickets will cost $5 instead of $2, according to lottery officials per the NY Post. With this price hike, players will have better odds of winning larger jackpots as part of a major update to the lottery set for April 2025, reports note.

Lottery officials believe that the promise of bigger jackpots will attract more players, even with the higher ticket prices. At this time, the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are about 1 in 302.6 million. In the game’s history, six players have won jackpots over $1 billion, and around 1,200 players have become millionaires. However, fewer people are buying tickets regularly unless there’s a huge jackpot on the line.

“We expect more billion-dollar jackpots than ever before, meaning creating more billionaires and many more millionaires as the jackpots climb, plus this game will continue the important legacy of supporting great causes everywhere Mega Millions is played,”

said Joshua Johnston, director of the Washington Lottery and lead director of the group that oversees Mega Millions.

The extra money from ticket sales will help state lotteries, which use the funds for various government services. This $3 increase is only the second time Mega Millions has raised ticket prices — which are available in 45 states, plus Washington, DC, and the US Virgin Islands. Research shows that many Americans are fine with spending $5 on scratch-offs or lottery tickets, which is similar to or even less than the cost of a coffee from Starbucks, according to Johnston.

One reason for these updates is to make Mega Millions more appealing to players compared to their competitor, Powerball, Johnston mentioned. More details about the changes will be shared in the coming months.
